Originally, the biggest cave in Yungang was designed as a large pagoda, but it was not finished during the Northern Wei dynasty. There used to be a wooden attic outside of the cave, but it is long gone and now only the 12 beam holes remain. Both the eastern and western side have an entrance, with images of Amitabha, Guanyin, and Mahastamaprapta – the holy triad of the west – carved into the northern wall. The main sculpture is a 10m high sitting Bodhisattva on both sides.
